Studio Seilern Architects designed El Gouna Festival Plaza in El Gouna, Egypt.
This project is a large public space of island plazas on an artificial lagoon, surrounded by protective colonnades made up of arched barrel vaults.
El Gouna Festival Plaza is the first stage of the Gouna Conference and Culture Centre, which was designed to be a landmark cultural destination for the resort town.
It currently has the capacity as an open-air venue and will eventually be activated by a 600-seat concert hall and 2,000-seat conference centre.
The aesthetic impact of this outdoor design is the creation of an oasis-like space, protected from the sun and incorporating the cooling effects of water flow and wind protection systems – while also framing the unique surrounding landscape.
This project has been longlisted in the landscape project category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
