Bence Mulcahy has designed the renovation of Fusilier Cottage in Tasmania, Australia.
This project is the renovation of a cottage that occupies the corner of the site with a garden and a large sycamore tree. The new program is accommodated at the rear of the cottages, with the living pavilion peeking into the street-facing garden.
Form, scale and materiality of the new engage with context and are subservient to the main cottage – while observing a healthy setback from the sycamore.
The sliding doors and screens moderate privacy, light and views and utilise the "shadow" of the existing cottage to create privacy behind. The changing facade provides enjoyable engagement with the streetscape.
Appearing small and simple upon inspection, the new cottage reveals itself as expansive and complex.
This project has been longlisted in the residential rebirth project category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
