BCA Landscape and Smiling Wolf designed the Glade of Light in Manchester, United Kingdom.
This project is dedicated to 22 concertgoers who, on 22 May 2017, had their lives taken in a terrorist attack at the Manchester Arena.
Landscape Architecture studio, BCA Landscape and designers, Smiling Wolf created the Glade of Light as a contemporary memorial landscape with emotional power and honesty. It has become a significant place in the heart of Manchester for the personal and communal process of remembrance, grieving and healing.
A visitor is not a viewer standing apart from the memorial, but an active part of a living process, invited into the glade to pay their respects, show their love and celebrate the lives of the 22 people that had their lives tragically taken away.
The abstract design is an emotional response to the ineffability of sorrow and loss. It's a special place where people can briefly pause time, find a place of quiet and stillness in their busy lives, reflect and linger a while.
This project has been longlisted in the landscape project category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
