BioMat has designed Lightpro Shell Pavilion in Stuttgart, Germany.
This project is an active-bending structure made of natural fibre bio-composite profiles, with a 10m-span canopy showcasing the capabilities of a newly developed material, in the form of "bamboo-like" profiles made of natural flax and hemp fibres. The profiles are entirely biodegradable and can be applied in a variety of structural applications or ephemeral structures.
This innovative structure of the Lightpro Shell Pavilion demonstrates a sustainability approach toward a future architecture that aims to introduce to the market alternative sustainable materials for structural applications.
The overall goal of this project is to promote the use of bio-based materials in the construction industry. The produced profiles are part of one of the material groups with the highest potential in this area; the natural fibre-reinforced polymers (NFRP) which are filled or reinforced with annually renewable lignocellulosic fibres.
This project has been longlisted in the sustainable building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
