Fyra has designed the New Nordic School by the Sea in Helsinki, Finland.
This project is located just off the Baltic Sea, which is why the sea and nature are strong themes that run throughout the interior design. The headquarters of the mobile game developer Supercell is located in the unique Wood City, a massive wooden structure right at the entrance to Helsinki’s Jätkäsaari marital neighbourhood – Fyra was given the task to design a kindergarten for the same building.
The point of the design process was to create a functional space that would support children's development and inspire creativity, security and joy.
The organic design language and the abundant use of wood speak both to the building and its surroundings. Wavy and round fish-like shapes soften the space and add to its playfulness.
New Nordic School By the Sea emphasises the importance of spatial design with great attention to detail and focuses on the young user group – young children. Empowering the children who use the space by making them feel welcomed, inspired and understood in the environment is at the heart of the design process.
This project has been longlisted in the civic and cultural interiors category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
