Notpla has created a paper that transforms a wasted resource into a visually-distinct and tactile product that celebrates its origin and reduces the need for wood pulp.
Notpla Paper aims to alleviate pressure on the world’s forests by replacing virgin wood pulp with wasted by-products from the industrial processing of seaweed, used to create the company's range of packaging material.
The development of the paper came from experimental material design research in the lab, through to working with research institutions, the seaweed industry, paper manufacturers and waste processors.
The result is a material that can be produced and processed at scale, and that is recyclable, naturally compostable and compatible with existing printing and conversion technologies.
This project has been longlisted in the sustainable design category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
