Huazhong University of Science and Technology and F.O.G. Architecture have created a shared space for villagers on the site of a former waterworks factory in China.
The project is located on the side of the Gonghe waterworks factory and is connected to a natural village. By transforming the courtyard of the waterworks factory into a public space, the site provides a shared place for villagers.
The design rejects the normal pavilion form and instead breaks down this building type into two structural elements: the roof and the podium. The roof part forms a continuous corridor, while the podium part becomes a viewing platform for looking upwards. By redefining the roof and podium, the design provides two different, yet complementary, viewing experiences.
This project has been longlisted in the small building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
