XAA has renovated a brick factory building in Guiyang, China.

This project is focused on realising the recycling of old buildings and meeting the ever-changing needs of urban development. This notion is key to the design and renovation of the Guiyang Bearing Factory.

The Guiyang Bearing Factory was built in 1958, and its original five brick factory buildings and surrounding land for environmental facilities have been completely preserved.

These buildings were once used to make bearing products, but their production function has faded in the wake of urban development.

The renovation project hopes to meet the needs of functional transformation through the recycling of buildings – while considering the best way to carry out "spiritual intervention...to reconstruct the coexisting relationship between the spiritual world and urban life."

This project has been longlisted in the rebirth project category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
