Sò Studio has designed Restaurant Lunar in Shang Hai Shi, China.
This project is a modern Chinese restaurant situated inside a standalone villa at the heart of Shanghai on West Jianguo Road. The restaurant's menu is based on the 24 solar terms in the traditional Chinese lunar calendar to celebrate the quintessential way of Chinese dining, which advocates eating with the change of seasons. Embracing seasonality and terroir is at the core of the restaurant’s dining experience design.
The design team, Sò Studio, conceived the space in the hope of conveying a sense of tranquillity and comfort, to isolate from the hustle and bustle of urban life.
The interior design not only incorporates traditional Chinese structure details but also pays attention to the bigger picture of aesthetics – the appropriate scale and geometric ratio based on Chinese aesthetics strike a coherent balance in the space.
Restaurant Lunar is dominated by matte surfaces where without excessive reflection, it conveys calm and beauty through the tactile textures.
This project has been longlisted in the restaurant and bar interiors category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
