Denton Corker Marshall designed the Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) in Greater Shepparton, Australia.
This project creatively interweaves landscape, art and architecture through materiality, form and relationship to the museum.
SAM is a distinctive art museum: a space of contrasts, reflection and discovery, and full of delight.
The resultant footprint, extruded over five levels, generates the distinctive small-and-tall art museum – maximising the surrounding parkland while creating a beacon in the landscape.
SAM’s facade of four floating L-shaped plates appears suspended at different heights and contrasting materiality – while an open central atrium creates a light-filled interior with views of the landscape.
This project has been longlisted in the cultural building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
