Büro Ziyu Zhuang has designed The Chamber Church in Qingdao, China.

This project aims to create a spiritual space that respects the past while looking into the future.

The Chamber Church provides a religious experience with a secular touch. Looking back, we find the archetypes of architectural associations in history – the design echoes those memories, while interpreting them into timeless modernity, creating a sense of the future.

When designing this ceremonial space, Büro Ziyu Zhuang believed that "the internal logic from form to construction should be simple and pure throughout the design of the Chamber Church." Essentially, a true fusion of heritage and contemporaneity.

This is echoed through the cascading white slices that wrap the main construction system of the building, giving the entire assembly a concise and austere atmosphere – both a contemporary aesthetic tendency and an element of tradition.

This project has been longlisted in the cultural building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
