Vaishali Kamdar Associates has created an experiential space in India to redefine the typical carpet store.
The project is located in the grounds of Narain Niwas Palace Hotel in the heart of Jaipur, and is set within a heritage structure built in 1928, assumed to be an entrance to the gardens of the palace.
The design retains the red sandstone columns with arches, 13-feet-high ceilings and elegantly proportioned cornices, offset by seamless white epoxy floors and white lustre painted walls to showcase the variety of carpets while allowing for appreciation of the architecture.
The showstopping Manchaha Maze installation was designed to be experienced as a dramatic encounter with fluid, curved and tapering carpet-clad screens of varying heights that would generate curiosity and visual engagement. Framed by the arched doorway and accentuated with a black border detail, it encapsulates the forward-thinking feel of the space with a respect for heritage and tradition.
This project has been longlisted in the small retail interiors category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
