Shajing Village Hall in southeastern China sees the ruins of an old power plant transformed into a community hub.
ARCity Office designed Shajing Village Hall in the city of Shenzhen as a public space open to residents. The project is surrounded by Guangdong province's Maozhou River and serves as a symbolic and spiritual space for creativity, leisure, and services among other functions.
The building respects the structure of Shajing Village's existing old ancestral hall, using steel and glass blocks to pay heed to seven spatial elements that comprise a typical traditional Guangdong ancestral hall.
It hosts a variety of traditional cultural activities such as village history exhibitions, folklore ceremonies, ancestor memorials, family deliberations, and cultural exchanges.
This project has been shortlisted in the civic building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
