Sinking House was created to highlight the growing dangers and rising sense of urgency with regards to the climate emergency.
In October 2021, architectural practice Stride Treglown teamed up with Format Engineers, artist Anna Gillespie and Fifield Moss Carpentry to deliver an ambitious climate emergency installation.
Sinking House appeared semi-submerged in a seemingly perilous location close to the turbulent Pulteney Weir. On the chimney, a human-like figure held onto a 'COP26' rope which prevented the house from sinking. Inspired by Greta Thunberg's 'Our house is on fire' speech delivered at the 2019 World Economic Forum and the devasting European floods of 2021, the installation represented how COP26 offered the world a 'lifeline' to avert climate disaster.
It was designed to deliver a powerful message of warning, and hope, to UN leaders gathering at COP26 and to communities around the world: the time to act on the climate emergency is now, before it's too late.
This project has been shortlisted in the installation design category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
