Winner: Rebirth project of the year 2022. Scott Whitby Studio has restored a sea lido in the Cornish town of Penzance, United Kingdom.
Jubilee Pool was focused on the restoration of Grade II Listed art deco sea lido that suffered all the ravages of the Atlantic Ocean and has been sensitively brought back to its former glory.
The Jubilee Pool was partially funded via a community share offer and is now owned and run by the people of Penzance, a small town in Cornwall.
It is now the second geothermal-heated swimming pool in the UK – the first being the Romans in Bath.
The lido's contemporary interventions sit back and let the sweeping curves – designed to break the wave – of the original pool and its setting to take centre stage.
Judges comments: "This project represents a holistic idea of rebirth and sustainability. It sensitively reflects the guardianship of the community of this civic asset and the desire to preserve and elevate its use so that it continues to be used and well-loved for future generations."
