Ann Nisbet Studio has built Cuddymoss in Ayrshire, United kingdom.
Located in the Ayrshire landscape, Cuddymoss seamlessly integrates a modern dwelling with a two-hundred-year-old stone and brick ruin.
The aim was to preserve the ruin's character while elevating its narrative and aesthetics. A "building within a ruin" concept emerged, inserting a timber frame structure within the existing stone walls to create a harmonious connection.
Repairs were gently made to the ruin's exterior, highlighting its rich history. Additionally, a second building, complementing the ruin's proportions, was added to the site.
The project prioritised sustainability with a "light touch" design approach, using locally sourced and reclaimed materials, solar energy, and natural insulation. The surrounding landscape has also been preserved, encouraging wildlife and showcasing ecological mindfulness.
This project has been longlisted in the rural house category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
