Renzo Piano Building Workshop has completed Istanbul Modern, its inaugural project in Turkey.

The art museum stands on the historic Karaköy waterfront, its three stacked rectilinear volumes resembling a ship. Reflective aluminium panels on the facade emulate fish scales and the Bosphorus' glinting water.

The ground floor of Istanbul Modern is fitted with expanses of glass, offering waterfront views. It houses the library, café and gift shop, as well as education, exhibition and event spaces.

On the museum's first floor are galleries, offices, a restaurant, and terraces, while the second floor hosts permanent collections.

A rooftop terrace with a reflective pool extends towards the Bosphorus, embodying the museum's connection to the sea.

This project has been longlisted in the cultural project category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
