London-based Citizens Design Bureau has breathed new life into Jacksons Lane, an arts and circus centre housed in an old church.
The revamp focuses on streamlining and enhancing the functionality of the Grade II-listed structure, aligning it with its role as a hub for contemporary circus arts.
The studio's approach involved decluttering and simplifying the interior layout, revealing the original cruciform plan. They introduced a warm colour palette, including deep reds, oranges and teals, alongside elements like acoustic windows.
The retrofit also uncovered hidden architectural features and reestablished the building's original entrance, creating a more welcoming and legible space. Ramps and lifts were added to improve accessibility.
This project has been longlisted in the heritage project category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
