Polo has redeveloped Maakleerplek in Leuven, Belgium.

"When we take on the challenge to activate a temporarily available site, it becomes an exercise in doing more with less," said Polo. "Through carefully choreographed interventions, we breathe new life into precious industrial heritage and devise spaces like open-ended questions."

Polo's aim was to achieve maximal effect through modest means, unlocking the potential of impressive spaces through precise design operations.

This minimalist approach is motivated by budgetary constraints and temporariness but also keeps the design flexible and sustainable.

"We prioritise no-nonsense, practical solutions above any pre-conceived aesthetic effects," added Polo. "This is about letting go and giving back control to the end-user."

This project has been longlisted in the sustainable renovation category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
