Monash University Department of Design was commissioned by K5 Furniture to design the Phenomenal Fungi furniture collection.
Phenomenal Fungi is a collection of acoustic furniture made of mycelium, a type of fungus.
Commissioned by K5 Furniture in Australia, Gyungju Chyon and an interdisciplinary team of students from Architecture, Spatial Design, Industrial Design and Art at Monash University designed eight pieces of furnishing objects – lighting, wall tiles and space dividers.
Mycelium, discarded fashion textiles and agricultural and food waste were the primary materials used to reduce waste in manufacturing processes and the end life of objects.
Mycelium surfaces' impermanent, transient nature is celebrated and highlighted as a new bio-aesthetic experience, adding richness to indoor environments.
This project has been longlisted in the sustainable design (consumer) category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
