University of East London (UEL), the Sustainability Research Institute (SRI) and Grimshaw have collaborated to design Sugarcrete®.

The University of East London's (UEL) Master of Architecture and the Sustainability Research Institute (SRI) has developed an innovative construction material, Sugarcrete® .

With the support of Tate & Lyle Sugars, arable by-products provide a sustainable, ultra-low-carbon construction alternative to existing high-carbon materials.

In creative partnership with Grimshaw, the first technical application of Sugarcrete® – Sugarcrete® Slab – was revealed in 2023.

Sugarcrete® has been nominated for this year's Earthshot Prize by former winners, Notpla, in the 'Build a Waste-Free World' category and its deployment is planned in projects in India, Costa Rica and Mexico.

This project has been longlisted in the material innovation category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
