CO-LAB Design Office has built Villa Petricor in Tulum, Mexico.

Named after the earthy scent of rain on dry soil, Villa Petricor embraces prevailing winds for natural ventilation. Arched openings and niches create a fluid transition between rooms and the exterior.

Walls are made of polished cement, and floors are covered with terrazzo. Both materials were coloured with a mineral pigment that was mixed on-site.

On the ground level open living space, pivot doors lead to a terrace and a small swimming pool. Upstairs, the split-level main suite features a sleeping area, bathroom, lounge and terrace, all under a vaulted ceiling.

Carefully positioned windows provide "green views" and invite daylight, while a distinctive concrete block brise-soleil on the entrance facade offers glimpses inside while ensuring privacy.

This project has been longlisted in the rural house category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
