RootStudio has transformed a former convent into an educational hub in the historic centre of Oaxaca, Mexico.
The Centro Gastronómico de Oaxaca aims to foster community integration through classrooms and a public library alongside commercial and recreational areas including a cafeteria, gallery and retail premises.
RootStudio was tasked with respecting Oaxaca's history while embracing contemporary needs. In order to preserve the primary features and historical layout of the Carmen el Alto convent, the studio followed guidelines from the Oaxaca department of the National Institute of Anthropology and History.
The 16th-century building was renovated using traditional construction techniques and materials. Lime, brick, wood, and green cantera stone restore the original structure while maintaining its appearance and layout.
With features including a restaurant, kitchen, cocktail and tasting rooms, RootStudio's heritage recovery project aims to unites Oaxacan gastronomic culture's past, present and future.
This project has been shortlisted in the heritage project category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
