Austin Maynard Architects has renovated Helvetia in Melbourne, Australia.

Helvetia is the alteration and renovation of a double-storey Victorian terrace home in Fitzroy, Melbourne.

"Twice reconfigured, once into a boarding house, then into apartments, this once grand family home was muddled, dark and in distress," said Austin Maynard Architects. "The challenge was to resurrect Helvetia; to create a lush, light-filled inner-city sanctuary, utilising one of the fundamentals of sustainability; reuse."

Helvetia is a considered, detailed and dynamic 'before and after' project; an exercise in making the most of what we have, and in highlighting the opportunities that lie within an existing structure – if time and thought is taken.

This project has been shortlisted in the house renovation category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
