Winner: Lighting design project of the year 2023. David Taylor has designed Knuckle Lights for Hem.
"Knuckle is essentially a series of sculptural objects with a high level of functionality," said David Taylor. "The soft/brutal visual play is a challenge for some, but this is exactly the point."
Knuckle is a family of lighting armatures with a distinctive visual identity developed to provide ambient and functional lighting according to mood and necessity.
"An object or product that confronts the sensibilities will be more highly valued by those who are bold enough to embrace it, than purchase decisions based simply on price and function," added David Taylor. "Hem made a brave move by asking a craftsman to do a product designer's job and in doing so have honoured their grounding design philosophy by putting the Knuckle series into production."
Judges comments: "A light that is not overdesigned, that expresses the honesty of material in a single gesture, as well as visually celebrating the process of production. It is a refreshing example of embracing the nature of direct and simple manufacturing without being precious."
