Aileen Sage Architects has upgraded 119 Redfern in Surry Hills, Australia.
The upgrade of the heritage-listed former Redfern Post Office building – located on Gadigal land in what is now known as Sydney – is necessitated not only physical but psychological accessibility for future use to be determined by the First Nations community.
"The approach to 119 Redfern St centres Country, revealing, respecting and reusing materials from this place while opening up the building to protected yet public spaces and initiating connections to sky, earth and water," said Aileen Sage Architects.
Part of an ongoing collaborative conversation, a respectful, sensitive and celebratory approach seeks to embed Aboriginal perspectives in both process and built outcome.
This project has been longlisted in the heritage project category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
