Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner have renovated the Alsterschwimmhalle swimming pool in Hamburg, Germany.

Opened for the first time in 1972 and designed by Horst Niessen, Rolf Störmer, Walter Neuhäusser, and the engineer Jörg Schlaich, the indoor swimming pool was extensively renovated, converted and extended by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partner from 2020 to 2023.

The shell roof, the enormous interior with the 50-metre pool and the facade construction were retained.

At the same time, the sports facilities were comprehensively redesigned for the first time and supplemented with contemporary additions.

"Almost everything under the roof had to be modified so that the 1970s visionary gesture could remain unchanged," said Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner.

This project has been longlisted in the sustainable renovation category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
