Gustavo Penna Arquiteto & Associados has designed Brumadinho Memorial in Brumadinho, Brazil.
The Brumadinho Memorial is a poignant tribute to the victims of the Brumadinho dam collapse in Brazil that fosters community healing, awareness and environmental responsibility.
This memorial integrates sustainable design with profound emotional resonance, providing a place for individual and collective mourning.
The project features 272 yellow ipê trees, symbolising each victim, and uses locally sourced materials like natural stone and reclaimed wood.
The design includes a twisted entrance pavilion, a contemplative pathway engraved with victims' names, an immersive Memory Space and a serene lookout over a lake, creating a living testament to resilience and remembrance.
This project has been longlisted in the civic project category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
