Dear Objects – Marc Meeuwissen has created Brutalista 01, as part of the Brutalista series of hand-sawn furniture.
In the series entitled 'Brutalista', the designer takes over the tool from the craftsman, more specifically, the handsaw.
Typically, Valchromat is ideal for machining and 3D routing as it's applied so that only the surface of the sheet is visible.
In this design, it's the opposite: the smooth surface is shown as little as possible and the cross-section of the sheet with the rough-sawn structure is shown as much as possible.
The used plate is turned inside out and given a new surface with a texture reminiscent of wood-cast concrete.
The handsaw's limited possibilities determine not only the shape of the object but also the texture of the surface.
"It is constructed from one-piece layers, sawn by hand," said Dear Objects. "Some surfaces are covered with sawdust."
This project has been longlisted in the furniture design category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
