Reyes Ríos + Larraín Arquitectos has renewed and redesigned the Cosoleacaque Main Square in Mérida, Mexico.
The renewal of the main square of Cosoleacaque was part of a nationwide program of public space interventions.
The design principles applied to this specific plaza align with the idea of improving the quality of social life based on a deep review of how and why people have used the existing physical facilities.
Due to the climate conditions and ancient cultural roots, the whole public space intervention, with the addition of ramps for people with disabilities, was deeply reconfigured in response to basic design strategies.
These strategies included flexibility of use, recycling and optimising existing elements in good condition, and introducing materials with heavy-duty performance that were also available locally.
This project has been longlisted in the landscape and urban design category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
