Albion Stone and Hutton Stone have developed Heritage Portland Stone Bricks and Darney Heritage Natural Stone Bricks.
Albion Stone and Hutton Stone haven't produced stone bricks until now, as using existing equipment would not have been cost-effective.
However, they spotted a potential market for their ever-growing surplus of imperfect stone.
Both companies collaborated on product development to create new specialist equipment that didn’t exist before.
They worked with manufacturers of existing machinery designed to make paving stones, modifying it specifically to create a bespoke brick cutter.
Together, they now have the capacity to produce a million stone bricks a year.
They commissioned London-based architecture practice Artefact to design a pavilion called 'Brick from a Stone' to celebrate the launch of their new stone bricks.
This project has been longlisted in the sustainable design (building product) category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
