Studio Architectuur Maken has designed Hortus Ludi in Nijmegen, Netherlands.

Hortus Ludi redefines modern living by focusing on collectivism, circularity, climate resilience and a deep connection with nature.

Inspired by the existing Monastery buildings and garden, its architecture harmonises with the surroundings combining traditional elements with modern design.

Sustainability is at the core of Hortus Ludi, which features green roofs, rain barrels, permeable surfaces, and 127 integrated bird and bat nests to promote urban biodiversity.

A shared monastery garden unites residents – while a collective gateway welcomes them to 11 homes.

Entirely crafted from CLT timber, Hortus Ludi stands as a beacon of innovation, merging environmental consciousness, community identity and cutting-edge design.

This project has been longlisted in the housing category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
