Fernanda Canales has designed the House for the Elderly in the Sonoran Desert, Naco, Mexico.
This project is part of the federal government's initiative to provide health facilities and community spaces in Mexico's most marginalised areas.
Located in the border city in the state of Sonora, the House for the Elderly is situated in an abandoned site near the border crossing where there are no paved roads and safe public spaces.
The building is a single-storey development around a central courtyard, so every space offers openness and privacy.
All circulations are developed around this central open space surrounded by gardens, with a second building on the rear part of the plot for health.
This project has been longlisted in the health and wellbeing project category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
