Malik Architecture has created and developed J-House in Mumbai, India.

This project emerges as a context-driven "Urban Artefact, a new archetype for the city of Mumbai," according to Malik Architecture.

The design aims to re-establish a substantive relationship with the street by eliminating the presence of a massive building at street eye level.

The individual bungalows were planned around central north-facing courtyards, with both public and private spaces located in the east and west zones, allowing natural light and breezes to flow through.

"We have adopted passive design strategies and the project has evolved through iterations of three indigenous devices: Courtyard, Verandah, Jaali/ Screens in existing adaptable dwellings," said Malik Architecture.

This project has been longlisted in the housing category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
