Atelier Tao+C has renovated the Magy Upper Apartment in Shanghai, China.
Designed in 2022 when the city was in lockdown, Atelier Tao+C responded to the client's request for "a comfortable interior that one would feel poised even whilst being confined for a few months" with a proposal combining comfort and functionality with a monastic sensibility.
A bespoke, multi-purpose shelving system made from humble materials that wrap around the space was employed for a more convenient and cost-worthy approach without dismantling any existing structures.
Located on Wulumuqi Road and adjacent to a lively neighbourhood, the studio encompasses easy access to collective facilities downstairs.
This allows the design to weave a new interpretation into the relativity of public and private realms in a private room and enables one's imagination towards a solitary life in a cell that still belongs to the entirety of the metropolis.
This project has been longlisted in the residential interior category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
