Haworth Tompkins and White Arkitekter have designed the Malmo Stadsteater in Malmö, Sweden.
Opening up the theatre to the life of the city and welcoming audiences and communities into the building form the heart of Malmo Stadsteater.
A new flexible-format auditorium creates an intimate performance space, merging the raw energy of new architectural elements with the historic shell of the original circus amphitheatre.
The auditorium connects to the street by a new foyer that part-covers an existing courtyard, providing an informal events space and an inviting route between a new street-facing café, a children's studio space and the previously hidden auditorium.
In addition, the theatre is now more porous and accessible and as a result, artistically flexible.
This project has been longlisted in the cultural project category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
