ARCity Office has transformed and redesigned a complex into the Modified House in Shenzhen, China.

The Modified House project is a mini complex in an urban village in Nantou Ancient Town, with a population of over 30,000, most of whom are workers, migrant workers, low-income groups and young people.

"The urban village consists of illegal peasant houses, which are usually informal living spaces that locals have incrementally added to and modified on their homesteads over the years," said ARCity Office.

Drawing on the concept and methods of car modification, the architects transformed a dilapidated self-built house by a villager into a mini complex that includes office space, retail areas and a public gallery.

This project has been longlisted in the small project category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
