MA+Co has transformed and extended Northcote House in Richmond, Australia.

Hidden behind an unassuming weatherboard facade emerges an urban oasis, undaunted by the challenges of the long, derelict plot, Northcote House's site has been transformed.

Occupying two lots, one accommodates the house, while the other – which could not be built upon – is now a linear garden.

The extension is expressed as a simple, repetitive form, each room embellished by its unique relationship to the garden.

"This home interrogates the qualities of good housing, spatially intriguing, respectful of the site, sustainable and affordable," said MA+Co.

"Adaptable spaces accommodate the family's current lifestyle while also offering flexibility for future needs."

This project has been longlisted in the house renovation category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
