Grimshaw has designed the Parramatta Aquatic Centre in Parramatta, Australia.
The Parramatta Aquatic Centre (PAC) is a community facility that thoughtfully balances the need for a large building footprint with the preservation of the site's historical landscape.
Unlike conventional facilities, the PAC was designed as a community landscape that allows programmes to be organised around the central space, maintaining the park and pool as its focal point.
The materials incorporate recycled construction waste, concrete, timber and native flora while paying homage to the area's First Nations heritage through consultation with Darug Elders.
"Sustainability was a priority, evident in features such as woodland areas, water-sensitive urban design, a photovoltaic array and energy-efficient elements," said Grimshaw.
This project has been longlisted in the health and wellbeing project category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
