Tadeas Podracky has designed Risen from the Ashes, a glass chandelier.

The glassmaking craft was historically built on closed, self-sufficient communities that relied on family ties and were directly dependent on the region and its resources.

This idea of community craft has now lost importance, where closeness is no longer relevant in the glass manufacturing process: raw materials are sourced to match production's quality and price and products are rarely meant for the local market.

"[The] alienation of the glass craft brings the fantastical scenario: what if glass artefacts were not made by the hands of artisans but grow[n] from sand and ashes?" said Tadeas Podracky.

As a result, this project blends imagination, craft and technology to investigate contemporary craftsmanship.

This project has been longlisted in the lighting design category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
