Gianni Botsford Architects has converted The Old Byre on the Isle of Wight, United Kingdom.

Set on a ridge above West Cowes near the shipyards, The Old Byre is a conversion of two old farm buildings into a home, workspace and residency for visiting artists.

Insulated and wrapped in corrugated cement board on the outside, this project preserves the historic barn interiors, reversing the conventional approach to conversions.

In the landscape, The Old Byre appears indistinguishable from other farm buildings nearby.

From the central courtyard, on the other hand, a complex domestic exterior unfolds, framed by a translucent facade that bathes interior spaces in daylight and glows outside at night.

This project has been longlisted in the house renovation category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
