Jeju Studio and Arh+have developed the Wayair Foundation School for a refugee community in Ulyankulu, Tanzania.
This project serves more than students with a set of buildings resulting in the creation of diverse public spaces inspired by the major local meeting place – the grain market – inviting community building practices.
"Ulyankulu is transforming from the three-decade-long uncertainty of being a temporary home into a place where the future can be built due to the naturalisation process for refugees," said Jeju Studio.
Through this development, the Wayair Foundation School aims to create an institution equipped with a unique democratic education model and infrastructure that promotes a harmonious relationship with the environment and sustainable building practices.
This project has been longlisted in the education project category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
