Studio Morphogenesis has designed the Zebun Nessa Mosque in Savar, Bangladesh.
This project is a pigmented concrete mosque intended to be a "Breathing Pavilion" that serves as a spiritual-social space for workers in the garment industry.
"Situated on a high plinth, the monolithic mass features a simple yet efficient design, reminiscent of vernacular Bengal huts built on Bhiti," said Studio Morphogenesis.
Perforated walls create a microclimatic condition, keeping the interior cool with natural ventilation – while a shallow dome evokes the structural ingenuity of the large-span roof system manifested throughout the chronology of Islamic architecture.
Unlike conventional blank qibla walls, the qibla direction is defined by a wide arch opening that connects the interior to the exterior waterbody, allowing the prayer space to flow seamlessly towards light-filled infinity.
This project has been longlisted in the civic project category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
