Winner: Health and wellbeing project. MJMA Architecture & Design has developed the Churchill Meadows Community Centre and Sports Park in Mississauga, Canada.
Located within a rapidly growing neighbourhood, this project turned a 50-acre site into richly textured parkland, with a 74,000-square-foot community centre as its focus.
The Churchill Meadows Community Centre and Sports Park are integrated with the surrounding landscape both programmatically and formally – together, the building and park comprise a vital hub for leisure, sport, and recreation.
The striking canopy that runs along the facades makes visible the building's Mass Timber structure – an array of glulam columns that provide structural and curtainwall framing.
With a simple yet dynamic form, the centre signals its purpose as a neighbourhood beacon for social gathering and healthful activity.
Judges comments: "This project transforms a typically mundane building type by embracing light in a sophisticated and thoughtful way, creating spaces that elevate communal wellbeing. Its integration with the surrounding park amplifies its connection to nature, while the use of mass timber construction highlights its sustainability. Overall, this project masterfully combines form, function and environment to create a healthier, more uplifting space."
