Highly Commended: Infrastructure and transport project. IARA has revitalised and redesigned the FW JI·Covered Bridge on Aqueduct in Huangshan, China.
Preserving the original structure, IARA added a lightweight covered wooden bridge using CLT and local wood, hand-installed to avoid large equipment and ensure maximum environmental protection.
IARA said, "In 2023, we launched the Fengwu Ji village revitalisation program in Huangshan, China."
"As a sub-project, the covered bridge on aqueduct transformed an abandoned aqueduct into a vibrant communal space."
Upon completion, the new bridge gently intertwines with the old structure, creating a nurturing gathering space, honouring the village's memory and injecting vitality into daily public life.
Judges comments: "This elegant project demonstrates that you don't need a huge budget to create something impactful. The beautifully designed and meticulously detailed timber structure has reinvigorated an abandoned aqueduct, transforming it into a functional and beautiful piece of infrastructure."
