Maison Brummell Majorelle
by Bergendy Cooke

Winner: Hospitality project of the year. Bergendy Cooke has created the Maison Brummell Majorelle hotel in Morocco.

This boutique hotel project embraces local methods of building and local artisans' skills.

"The Maison Brummell Majorelle is a playful interpretation of Arabic architectural elements distilled through foreign eyes," said Bergendy Cooke.

Although inspired by Morocco's rich architectural history, it purposely does not attempt to replicate it – where the building's sculptural form pays homage to the ancient rampart walls of the Marrakech Medina.

This eight-room hotel is distributed over three floors, creating a layering of gardens and water, inspired by the ancient Medina Riads, who valued both water and plants as a way of creating an interior oasis in their homes.

Judges comments: "This project exemplifies how to create contemporary architecture that is deeply rooted in its place, utilising local materials, craftsmanship and building techniques in a modern and innovative way. It masterfully reinterprets vernacular architecture, bringing it to a contemporary level while maintaining a focus on sustainability and simplicity, to create inviting spaces that people will love to stay in."
