Winner: Heritage project of the year. KOOP Architects has restored and designed the new Seddülbahir Fortress in Sedd el Bahr, Turkey.

Built in 1656 by an Ottoman sultan's mother, the Ottoman fortress of Seddülbahir was severely damaged by the Allied Forces during the Gallipoli battles of World War One.

The restoration project and design for the museum strike a delicate balance between commemorating the war and revitalising the site for the community.

"The architecture invites all to reflect upon the impact of war on our lives and the environment and to cherish peace," said KOOP.

With its unique entrance complex, museum, artists' workshop and redesigned village square, Seddülbahir looks to a future in which war is now a distant, but important memory.

Judges comments: "This project masterfully balances the memory of the past with contemporary design, creating a light yet impactful intervention that celebrates both the old and the new. The subtle, respectful integration of new elements enhances the existing structure without overpowering it, offering a beautiful, harmonious result. Its ability to honour history while embracing the present makes it a clear winner in this category."
