Winner: Designer of the year. Rotterdam-based practice Studio Sabine Marcelis.
Marcelis began working within the fields of product, installation and spatial design, with a strong focus on materiality and sensorial experience. Her work is characterised by pure forms which highlight material properties.
She intervenes in the manufacturing process, using material research and experimentation to achieve new and surprising visual effects for projects both showcased in museums and commissioned by commercial clients and fashion houses.
Marcelis' work has been acquired into the permanent collection of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and The National Gallery of Victoria among others.
She recently collaborated with Japanese artisans for London Design Festival and created a water fountain in Amsterdam's biggest and most famous park.
Judges comments: "From a new chair and barstool for the Stedelijk Museum and Euro 2024 matchball plinths to a monolithic fountain in Amsterdam and solar sundials in the Egyptian desert, prolific designer Sabine Marcelis has enjoyed an active year in the ongoing development of her studio." said the judges.
"Creating an evolving and distinct portfolio of self-initiated designs as well as growing her roster of international clients, Marcelis continues to strengthen her place as a leading designer in her field."
