Winner: Health and wellbeing interior of the year. Divooe Zein Architects has restored and repurposed the interiors of The Mineless Heritage near Taipei, Taiwan.
The Mineless Heritage is a repurposed space created from an abandoned coal mine.
The original structures of the mining facility were scattered throughout the wilderness.
Various areas within the facility have been repurposed, including the preserved building of remnants, a wild herb tea shop, a small theatre, a natural herb tea aroma room, an exhibition area, a grand hall for meditation and a seating area with a tree's root in the sky.
Through the restoration, the existing space has been reorganised and redefined, aspiring to create a sanctuary for human connection with oneself, tranquillity, history and nature within the remnants of the mountainous coal mine.
Judges comments: “This project is very unique – a real escape. It is a wellness space that feels at one with nature. It offers you the opportunity to get as far away from your every day as possible and have a beautiful experience. The use of materials is very considered; you’re in this dark space, just looking out at the green forest around you. It’s the perfect place to calm the mind.”
