Unmaking for IZA Tokyo
by Office Shogo Onodera

Winner: Retail interior (large) of the year. Office Shogo Onodera has created and developed the 'Unmaking' concept for IZA Tokyo's fashion store in Tokyo, Japan.

'Unmaking' is an experimental design approach that was implemented at IZA Tokyo, a fashion store in Tokyo, by architect Office Shogo Onodera.

The site had been handed over before demolishment, with the previous store's interior materials still intact.

"This gave us an opportunity to develop our new design approach called Unmaking to recalibrate our commitment to sustainable methodologies," said Office Shogo Onodera.

The 'Unmaking' process adopted three actions to transform the existing materials: wrapping, altering quality and repurposing.

"While designing the new store, we focused on [the] demolition itself to reduce waste and new materials, creating a high-quality space filled with fine details like craft techniques," added Office Shogo Onodera.

Judges comments: “This project challenges the norms of what an interior retail space has to be. The storytelling elements are applied in a completely different way to what we've seen before. The title, Unmaking, is fitting, because it’s all about reverting the process of craft. It gives value to the idea of removing materials, with a sensitivity and attention to detail that makes you think. It is a fantastic example of forward-focused innovation.”
